Sightseeing in Aruba

While Aruba can be explored in a variety of modes of transport like a horse back ride, ATV or air conditioned coach, there are plenty of activities which can be suggested by your tour guide like swimming, snorkeling, etc. The plethora of cultural, natural and historical sites can be explained by your tourist guide through interesting narrative all the way.

California Lighthouse

"Hudishibana" an area near the island's northwestern tip is the place where the old stone California lighthouse stands bearing silent witness of the island's history. Named after the US ship of the same name which sank two years prior to its construction in 1910, the site is famous for the exhilarating and unforgettable views of the sunset as well as the sparkle which the fading light lends to the azure canopy. Perched on an elevation on the shores, the lighthouse has become the island's most prominent landmark which offers the visitor a spectacular view of its sprawling beaches, sand dunes and rocky coral landscape.

Caves

In the deep crevices of the earth along the island's windward coast there are shallow caves which intrigue the visitors who wish to get into areas of the unknown and unexplored. You could see some of the most mysterious cave drawings; hear the sudden and unnerving flapping of bat wings and some of the most natural designs made by stalagmites and stalactites. The two chambers of the Guadirikiri Cave are well known and popular with visitors because of the intriguing and romantic sunlight which seeps through the holes in the roof of the cave.

While the darker nooks are home to hundreds of bats, the cave extends to about 100 feet.

If you wish to seen the drawings of Arawak Indian cavemen, visit the Fontein Cave full of reminiscences of the past. The drawings are visible on the ceilings and leave you with a strange feeling that you are taken back into past thousands years from now.

Because of the heart shaped entrance, the Huliba cave is also known as the Tunnel of Love. Powerful flashlights are needed to explore the 300 feet long passageway.

Rock Formations

One of the most enigmatic features about Aruba is the presence of unusual hills and monolithic boulders in an otherwise plain and sandy island. These natural geological land formations add to the uniqueness of the island as well as add to many vantage points for the viewer to have a more panoramic view of the surroundings.

Casibari Boulders

In an area just north of Hooiberg, you could see a cluster of massive tonalite boulders which almost suddenly rise from the sandy desert soil to break the monotony of the landscape. With varied formations some of these boulders could weigh several tons. In a move to promote tourism, especially making it convenient for hikers to reach the top for a breathtaking view of the island, the Government of Aruba has constructed many walking trails and steps across these boulders.

Ayo Rock Formations

You could find a plausible answer why the original inhabitants of the island found the area sacred and auspicious when you witness enormous stone boulders which lie close to each other in rather unusual designs around the area of Ayo. This site is home to plenty of rock drawings which date back thousands of years and the place seems as if a giant had thrown across many pieces of huge stones all over the place. To explore this ancient site better there are many modern pathways which have been built for the convenience of the visitor.
